ONE: “Titles & Titans” is set for the Jakarta Convention Centre on Saturday night (Aug. 27, 2016) and a former title challenger will clash with a former champion in the main event as Luis Santos takes on Igor Svirid.
There’s also a potential middleweight title eliminator with promotional veteran Jake Butler going up against Marcin Prachnio while the card features six Indonesian or Indonesia based fighters. Here’s my preview of the first five fights (as always with ONE weights are normal walking weight).
145lbs.: Mario Wirawan vs Burn Soriano
Mario Wirawan ( 5-3) is best known for his 6 second KO of Chan Heng but the Indonesian hasn’t shown that sort of devastating punching power in any of his other fights. He’s primarily a striker and has a wide stance, maintaining his distance before exploding in with punches or kicks.
If Wirawan has a weakness it is his ground game but Burn Soriano (2-2) comes from a kickboxing background and is likely to want to keep things standing. They have an opponent in common, Tsunoto, and the Indonesian went the distance before losing a decision while the Filipino was stopped in the opening round.
185lbs.: Djatmiko Waluyo vs Islam Sayed
Djatmiko Waluyo (5-1) hails from Mexico but is of Indonesian decent. He came into ONE Championship with a very impressive undefeated record but was outgrappled and outfought by an opponent who is regarded as being something of a journeyman.
I couldn’t find any footage whatsoever on Islam Sayed (3-1) but Egyptian Top Team fighters have a very poor track record with ONE Championship. Difficult to predict what will happen her, but after losing on his promotional debut Waluyo will be desperate for the win.
145lbs.: Casey Suire vs Xie Bin
Casey Suire (5-2) has lost twice but both defeats have come at the hands of highly ranked opponents. He’s got a lot of BJJ experience, has competed in pro boxing and now trains full time with the Leone brothers at Bali Muay Thai & MMA.
That makes him experienced, tough and well rounded but he doesn’t have a lot of speed and that could be an issue as he’s taking on an opponent who is two decades younger. Zero footage or info on Bin who trains at Tianjin Top Team and is presumably making his pro debut.
155lbs.: Sunoto vs Yohan Mulia Legowo
Both these Indonesian fighters have wins over Mario Wirawan but Sunoto (4-2) went the distance whereas Yohan Mulia Legowo (8-4) scored a first round submission. The latter is a BJJ purple belt who made his pro MMA debut in 2002 while the latter has been fighting since 2013 and looks to be more of a wrestler.
Sunoto is a southpaw who looks to take opponents down and keep them down. Legowo did not look good in his first two ONE Championship fights but won his most recent fight by punishing a takedown attempt with a guillotine choke, interestingly lost earlier this year in exactly that fashion.
155lbs.: Anthony Engelen vs Sami Amin
Indonesia has a thriving BJJ scene and like so many fighters coming out of the country Anthony Engelen (4-2) looks to be primarily a grappler. The Dutchman might have started out training at Alistair Overeem’s camp in Holland but he looks to be much more comfortable on the ground.
That could be bad news for Sami Amin (5-3-0-1) who comes from a kickboxing background and fights out of Egyptian Top Team. His three losses have all been by way of submission and Engelen will probably feel he has the blueprint to beat him.
